Warning: not every QR scanner app is safe

How to spot manipulation and protect your data

More and more people rely on QR codes — convenient, fast and everywhere. What many don’t realise is that not every app that scans QR codes is trustworthy. Some so-called “QR scanner apps” on Android or iOS misuse the scan moment to request payment details, show ads, or even collect data without consent.

With DynaTag it’s different: our QR codes always open directly in your mobile browser, with no separate app. We don’t show ads, we never ask for credit card or payment details, and your data is hosted securely in Switzerland.

How third-party scanner apps trick users

  • They show their own interface instead of your browser, hiding the actual website being opened.
  • They inject ads or pop-ups to keep the app “free”.
  • They ask for payments or “extra verification” unrelated to the QR code.

It may look like you scanned a DynaTag code, but in reality there’s a middle layer — the app itself — that misleads you.

How to recognise a suspicious QR scanner app

  • The app asks for credit card or banking details after scanning.
  • You see ads or banners before or after the website opens.
  • Messages like “Enable premium to open this link”.
  • A URL that differs from what’s printed on the product or packaging.
  • The app forces login or registration without a clear reason.

If you see any of these signals, close the app and scan the QR code again using your phone’s camera — not a separate scanner app.

How to safely scan a DynaTag

  1. Open your phone’s camera (supported by both Android and iPhone).
  2. Point the camera at the QR code.
  3. Tap the link that appears — it opens directly in your browser.

That’s it. No app. No tracking. No payments.

The safest way to use DynaTag is via your browser — not through external QR apps.

What DynaTag does — and doesn’t do

DynaTag Unsafe scanner apps
Requests payment details ❌ Never ✅ Sometimes
Displays ads ❌ Never ✅ Often
Requires extra app ❌ No ✅ Yes
Shows real URL in browser ✅ Always ❌ Often hidden
Data hosted in Switzerland ✅ Yes ❌ Unknown

If you suspect fraud or have doubts

  • Do not share payment details via a QR scan.
  • Note the app name and the URL.
  • Contact support@dynatag.com if you suspect a code was displayed incorrectly or misused.
  • Consider removing the app and reporting it to your local consumer authority.
In short: the QR code itself is safe — the risk is the app that scans it. Always use your phone’s default camera app.
